Major Responsibilities

Month-end processing

Month End Close:

  • Key responsibilities include:
  • the preparation of the month-end financial statements for both Alterna Savings and Alterna Bank in accordance with the month end close process, including:
    • the preparation of adjusting journal entries and supporting analysis;
    • the preparation of the month end variance analysis workbook which includes a comparison of the month end results versus the prior month and budget;
    • the preparation of monthly financial statement commentary for the review of the Manager, Financial Reporting.
    • research of noted variances and preparation of adjusting entries, as required;
    • processing the consolidation of financial statements in Sage through booking elimination entries and review once processed to ensure in line with expected results;
    • preparation of internal financial statements for Alterna Bank and Alterna Savings;
    • preparation of general ledger reconciliations;
    • preparation of the Alterna Bank management fee calculation.

Monthly CFO Reports:

  • Preparation of the monthly CFO Report which includes:
    • The update of charts and tables and the associated narrative in the report for review by the Manager, Financial Reporting.
  • Completion of the month end workbook which involves collection of financial information from both internal and external sources (ex. Funds under management, forecasts and GL reconciliations)
  • Completion of balance sheet mix and related variance analysis.
  • Preparation of monthly and quarterly trend statistics and graphs to explain financial performance.

Other duties

  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Prepare Financial Reporting department's annual budget and quarterly forecasts and input into the budgeting system.
  • Annual external audit: Assist Manager, Financial Reporting prepare for interim, pension and year-end external audits. Duties include preparation of various sections of the audited financial statements and support schedules as requested in the auditor's client assistance package as well as answering audit queries in a timely manner.
  • Other financial queries: Provide assistance to internal clients with financial inquires and investigate outstanding items/discrepancies presented in reconciliations
  • Regulatory reporting: Provide full backup function for Senior Accountant Regulatory who prepares the regulatory filings for FSRA, OSFI and Stats Canada.
  • Other assistance: Participate in projects as requested by the Manager Financial Reporting.
  • Financial analysis: Preparation of the quarterly peer review workbook for review by Manager, Financial Reporting for submission to Libro Credit Union for compilation of industry statistics.
  • Dashboarding: Preparation of quarterly financial results in a dashboard presentation format for CEO and CFO review, and helping the Manager, Financial Reporting with Ad hoc financial dashboarding requests required to be completed in Microsoft Power BI

Qualifications

Education / Certifications / Experience

  • An accounting degree from an accredited Canadian university;
  • Working towards a CPA designation (enrolled in the CPA Professional Education Program or Masters of Accounting);
  • Two years of experience in an accounting or finance role;
  • Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Experience working within a financial institution will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with using Microsoft Power BI a strong asset

Accounting designation, or in middle stages of completion of an accounting designation (e.g. enrolled in the Masters of Accounting program or Core 1 modules) is considered an asset.
