Scope of Position

The Director of Treasury oversees treasury operations and provides leadership and coaching to the Treasury group for Alterna Savings'. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the treasury department. The areas covered include but are not limited to liquidity and funding management, cash and investment portfolio management, asset-liability management, interest rate management, financial modeling and analysis. This role is accountable for various corporate level reporting, risk analysis and recommendations in the areas of their responsibility as required to the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO), and to the Executive Leadership Team.

The Director of Treasury works closely supporting the VP Treasury to create and implement treasury-related and corporate strategies, which serve to meet operational requirements and achieve annual and long-term corporate goals.

Major Responsibilities

Cash and Investment Portfolio Management

  • Own the consolidated cash forecast and takes actions, promotes and leads changes as needed to ensure adequate cost effective cash position maintained
  • Seeks to identify and implement operational improvements in reporting and forecasting of day-to-day cash and liquidity positions
  • Seeks optimization strategies for investing excess cash.
  • Oversee all liquidity trades such as repo, warehouse financing and overnight deposits.
  • Maintains a fully invested cash position in accordance with relevant policies.

Asset Liability Management

  • Foster technology adoption and drive operational excellence while working with external consultants on managing interest rate risk
  • Oversees and seek operational improvements for input files.
  • Ensure Alterna Savings is in compliance with various risk metrics and takes action that is appropriate when the environment changes
  • Oversee the development and production of the monthly ALCO reporting and ensures accuracy and completness

Profitability Management

  • Oversees profitability reporting and continuously seeks operational improvements in the production of reports.
  • Provides recommendations to VP Treasury by analyzing monthly profitability reporting in order to generate additional income
  • Becomes a key contact with product managers to manage the current and future demands of products and services, based on historical trends and cycles and expected changes in the business methods.

Mortgage Acquisition

  • Oversees the pipelines of various business lines and ensures competitive positioning and provides recommendations based on the current needs of the organizations.
  • Oversee all settlement and maturity payments

Reporting

  • Work closely with various department heads across the organization including Enterprise Risk Management, Information Technology, Compliance and be comfortable presenting and challenging status quo on various recovery and resolution scenarios.
  • Oversee and continue to seek process improvements on annual updates to various critical reports such as recovery and resolution documents.
  • Oversee the monthly ALCO reporting and ensure compliance with all key risk indicators.

Team Management

  • Oversight and overall management of Treasury Operations
  • Provides leadership, guidance coaching, training and professional development of staff.
  • Developing and setting annual departmental goals and provide VP Key insights into strategic planning functions.
  • Implements effective performance management processes, employee development plans, coaching strategies and career management plans for direct reports.
  • Continuously investigates treasury management issues and industry trends in order maintain a high level of treasury management quality.

Qualifications

Education / Certifications / Experience

  • Professional accounting or financial certification or degree such as CFA/MBA/CA/CMA/CGA.
  • 8 + years of Treasury experience in a similar Management role.
  • 5+ year experience in data management, data analytics, trend analysis and report production developing and implementing modelling systems.
  • 5 years extensive experience with analytical and forecasting systems, banking systems and financial products and services technologies.

Knowledge / Skills

  • Knowledge of capital markets, money markets, foreign exchange markets, specifically including a detailed knowledge of financial derivatives.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and practices.
  • Knowledge of the Credit Union and Caisses Populaires Act, Bank Act, and other regulatory requirements (OSFI Guidelines, FSRA By-Laws).
  • Advanced knowledge of treasury management principles, practices and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) related to financial instruments as it relates to financial instruments
  • Strong fundamental understanding of bank profitability, key drivers of risk and return, and the impact of external trends or industry regulation
  • Proficiency in the understanding of balance sheet modeling principles and accounting principles.
