What will you be doing!

  • Ensuring Safety is paramount in all activities.
  • Engineering Planning:
    • Supervising personnel in the preparation of Design Plans, in accordance with 900-508120-MCP-001 - Design Planning.
    • Supervising personnel in the preparation of Activity Description and Estimates (AD&E) for all Science and Technology (S&T) Engineering jobs and tasks.
    • Supervising personnel in the preparation of changes of scope and/or extensions.
    • Supervising personnel in the preparation and presentation of high level estimates.
    • Supervising personnel in the preparation of detailed estimates.
    • Ensure that all work executed by the Science and Technology (S&T) Engineering group is properly planned in accordance in Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) processes and procedures.
  • Work Planning Coordination:
    • Preparing, reviewing, and supervising design plan schedules using project portfolio management systems approved by the Project Management Office (PMO).
    • Supporting the S&T Engineering to ensure that jobs, tasks and milestones are finalized on time and budget.
    • Maintaining an effective Project Report and Status database.
    • Generating dashboard performance metrics and recurrent reports for department, Director, GM and VP level, as required.
    • Interfacing with Project Engineers, Designers, Job leads, Design engineers, contract staff.
  • Engineering Change Control:
    • Supporting effective administration of Engineering Change Control in liaison with the Engineering Change Control office.
    • Ensuring activities in S&T follow compliance with Configuration Management.
    • Maintaining proactive development of initiatives to promote efficiencies in Configuration Management, Engineering Change Control, and related processes and procedures in relation with the Decommissioning Process.
  • Engineering support leadership:
    • Leading a team of Process Mechanical and HVAC Engineers.
    • Evaluating employee performance and collaborating with employees to identify individual career and performance development opportunities, setting individual goals and developing and executing improvement plans.
    • Ensuring utilization targets for all staff are met to demonstrate maximum efficiency and effectiveness of resources.
    • Developing and maintaining core knowledge and skills in engineering technology and design drafting based on the future needs of S&T in alignment with CNL goals. This includes ensuring sufficient training of staff in the various technical disciplines, hiring new staff, and managing productivity and performance.
    • Coordinating with managers of the S&T Engineering department, Project Engineering Managers, S&T department staff to manage and secure resources for project needs.
    • Synergizing with other S&T managers to recommend and to make informed decisions as to when engineering deliverables are prepared and delivered internally, or by external engineering contractors.
    • Interfacing with the S&T leadership team to understand the future needs of the division, and assists in creating short and long terms goals for the internal S&T engineering team.
    • Acting as a delegate for other members of the CNL management team, as laid out in specific Delegation of Authority forms.
    • Providing technical guidance in their field(s) of expertise and seeking out appropriate technical resources to provide consultation and guidance for other fields in which their staff are working.
    • Participating in and promoting activities that lead to increased alignment of engineering services across CNL.
    • Assessing team and organizational performance and providing recommendations for improvement to the Director, S&T Engineering.
  • Developing of future Leaders through mentoring, and transfer of skills and knowledge.
  • Holding a key position in the S&T Leadership Team, participating in the larger S&T leadership team to achieve the objectives of S&T, Nuclear Laboratories and CNL.
  • Developing and maintaining good internal and external relationships to promote teamwork and collaboration.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Member of a provincial professional engineering association (eg. PEO).
  • Experience
    • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience with demonstrated exposure to projects in the Canadian nuclear industry, with good understanding of engineering procedures, work practices and records management system.
    • Demonstrated 5 plus years of leadership by way of supervision or management of small teams (direct reports), or complex multidisciplinary projects.
    • A good understanding of the types of engineering drawings and documents.
    • Familiarity with pertinent codes and standards (NBCC, CSA N285.0, CSA B51, ASME BPVC, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, etc.).
    • Good knowledge of nuclear technology and the Canadian nuclear industry.
    • Experience and ability to identify and quantify risks and develop and execute mitigation plans.
    • Demonstrated Leadership by way of supervision or management of small teams (direct reports), or complex multidisciplinary projects.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to negotiate acceptable timelines and actions for resolution of Division issues.
    • Demonstrated very strong planning and organizational skills.
    • Proven initiative, motivation, and good people skills to work with peers, internal and external clients.
    • Must be self-motivated and flexible relative to work assignments; possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and be able to interface with peers other company organizations and Senior Management.
    • Strong leadership skills, including planning, budgeting, resourcing, time management, negotiation skills, contract management and administration, and progress reporting for an executive audience.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
