Within the Shopify Merchant Lending organization, the Merchant Lending Credit team is responsible for the day-to-day operations, underwriting, and portfolio management of the suite of financial products provided by Shopify. Our primary responsibilities include: underwriting and approving applications, disbursement of funds, credit risk analytics and portfolio management, overseeing credit policy and procedures, and special projects to scale the platform for continued long-run growth (platform development, new products, etc).

In this role, the Analyst will evaluate portfolio performance for different lending products, ensuring a deep understanding of key trends and risk dynamics. By leveraging sophisticated statistical modeling techniques, they will analyze portfolio performance, identify patterns, and recommend data-driven solutions for optimization.Collaboration will be central to this role, as the Analyst will work closely with key stakeholders to develop actionable insights that support strategic decision-making. They will translate complex analytical findings into clear, impactful recommendations that drive improvements in portfolio management and credit policies.

The ideal candidate is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, data-driven environment. You will collaborate closely with our Data Science team to dig into the data and provide insights into key business trends.

Responsibilities:

  • Writing data queries and building clear data dashboards to evaluate portfolio performance

  • Measuring and effectively communicating results and business impact of data driven analysis to a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including leadership

  • Develop and execute strategies to support growth, manage risk and achieve business goals.

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of market trends,macroeconomic trends and impact to portfolio.

  • Utilize advanced statistical modeling techniques and data analytics to evaluate portfolio performance, forecast trends, and recommend adjustments .

  • Facilitate stakeholder sessions to identify opportunities for improved efficiency and effectiveness of Merchant Lending Credit everyday processes

  • Supporting cross-functional projects from inception to completion

  • Maintaining strong relationships and high trust batteries with project stakeholders and data partners

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in statistics, economics, decision science, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on quantitative analysis and data-driven decision-making.

  • Proven experience in portfolio management, risk management or lending within the financial services industry

  • Adept at creating meaningful data visualizations using tools (e.g. Looker Studio) and leveraging large datasets to draw data insights that drive business decisions

  • Proficient at writing complex and efficient SQL queries

  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem solving abilities

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, exemplified through effective data storytelling

  • Excellent time management skills - you thrive when you're working on multiple projects, and are adept at balancing priorities, stakeholders and deadlines

  • Ability to dive-in to day-to-day workings of multiple teams and understand the full scope of their functions and responsibilities

  • Experience with fraud and risk management and/or legal compliance

Bonus experience:

  • Experience working with big data/ process automation

  • Experience at a top management consulting firm, Fintech, bank or similar experience

  • Programming experience - any scripting language (e.g. Python, Ruby, Javascript)

  • Technical writing skills

  • Data warehousing and ETL experience

  • Leveraging statistical techniques to enhance data deep dives
