Job Summary
The employee will assist in collection and management of experimental research data and in analyzing and interpreting experimental results by performing tasks such as collection, assembly, compilation, analysis and summary of statistical and other data, and assisting in the drafting of reports or manuscripts. Standard techniques and protocols will be used to performs technical tasks.

Organizational Status
The position reports to Dr. Suzanne Simard, professor in the Faculty of Forestry. The employee will also work with Jean Roach and Dr. Suzanne Simard in preparation of the manuscripts.

Work Performed

  • Assists in gathering and compiling data from various sources
  • Assists in data cleaning and identification by performing standard techniques
  • Analyzes data and assist in its interpretation
  • Addresses any discrepancies in data or analysis and resolve as needed
  • Coordinates in the preparation of technical reports and manuscripts
  • Assist in the preparation of field work in 2025
  • May supervise and distribute work to students
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The employee will need to choose the most appropriate technique for the analysis and write the 'R' code. The employee is expected to make decisions when 'cleaning' the data, e.g., deciding if outliers or poorly replicated data should be omitted. These decisions will be checked by Suzanne Simard. Jean Roach and Suzanne Simard will check that the data is correctly interpreted when the manuscripts are prepared. The manuscripts will be peer-reviewed when submitted to the journals. The consequences of inappropriate judgement are incorrect interpretation of the results.

Supervision Received
The staff will work under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities. Dr. Suzanne Simard is the supervisor of the data analysis and will ensure that appropriate analysis methods are used. Suzanne Simard and Jean Roach will supervise preparation of the manuscripts, by ensuring that data analysis results are properly interpreted, and by editing the manuscript.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Forestry or related programs and at least one year experience in collection of data and conducting data analysis in 'R'. The employee must also have an intimate understanding of the Mother Tree Project experiment, the sites, the treatments, the data collection methodology, and any limitations of the data. The employee must also have an understanding of wildfire ecology and methodologies for assessing fire hazards, risks and impacts at the Mother Tree Project sites.
