Compensation Range

Job Summary

The Centre for Lung Health data analyst is a full-time integrated member of a community of clinicians, researchers, coordinators, technicians, and trainees, who optimizes collection, use, and interpretation of data designed to improve lung health across a spectrum of disciplines. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the design of a core merged database to be used by principal investigators across the Centre for Lung Health.

Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the Division Head of the Respiratory Division, in addition to the specific Principal Investigator (PI) of the project the incumbent is working on. Interactions with other research partners and liaison with other departments within the university as needed.

Work Performed

  • Develops a plan for database management at the Centre for Lung Health that is secure and meets the needs of the data stewards in including PopDataBC, the Ministry of Health and the different health authorities. The plan will result in the development of a core merged database that will be used as the basis for a myriad of studies by many of the principal investigators at the Centre for Lung Health.

  • Collaborates with Principal investigators at the Centre for Lung Health on the design and methodology for large multi-centre studies. Responsible for all complex modelling and analysis related to these studies.

  • Advises on methodology for epidemiological and clinical trial investigations, including randomization procedures, statistical power, and selection of outcome measures.

  • Performs modelling and analysis on a variety of topics including COPD, Asthma, Sleep Disorders, Air pollutions, Wildfire Smoke inhalation independently under the general directions of expert principal investigators. Provides well organized and documented code in Python, SQL, SAS and R in order to achieve the goals of the principal investigators.

  • Writes statistical methodology sections of grant proposals.

  • Leads data visualization, through the use of charts, tables, graphs, maps, infographics, and dashboards. Performs and interprets statistical analyses and makes recommendations on presentation of analytical products.

  • Performs quality control on data collected, assures compliance to the data definitions, identifies inconsistencies, and offers pathways to resolution.

  • Works with investigators in the Centre of Lung Health to obtain permissions and retrieve data from public and private databases.

  • Writes and publishes manuscripts as the first author where methodological and modelling advice is required.

Makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of work and is responsible for the quality of research activities. Inadequate performance my result in failure to achieve project objectives, publication, and could have significant impact on chances of receiving future funding.

Supervision Received
Reports to Division Head/PI. Works independently.

Supervision Given
Mentoring of trainees and other HQP.

Minimum Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of three years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD an asset although those with other degrees and equivalent experience will be considered.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, database handling, and software and hardware troubleshooting.

  • Team-oriented, committed and precise

  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability.

  • Effective oral and written communication, problem solving, interpersonal, multitasking and excellent organization.

  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively and precisely under pressure and time constraint accuracy and attention to detail required.

  • Expected to work collaboratively as part of a team with other clinical research coordinators, hospital staff, attending physicians, support staff, grant and industry sponsors and their representatives, regulatory agents, and clinical investigators.

  • Ability to exercise initiative, tact, and discretion are of critical importance.

  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.

  • Has excellent communication skills, and works well in a multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Is skilled in cross-sectional, cross (mixed effects), and longitudinal analysis for complex and time-varying exposure-response relationships, as well as dimension reduction techniques relevant to diverse datasets.

  • Experience with genomics, multiomics, big data and machine learning an asset.

  • Is willing to learn new techniques and novel analysis methods for application.

  • Skills in R required.

  • Experience with PopDataBC is an asset.

  • Additional skills in Python and STATA an asset.
