The Opportunity

This position is responsible for supporting the safety manager in delivery of technical safety services to clients by providing technical guidance to safety officers, contractors and certified individuals and by collecting information and developing improvements to the safety program. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be involved in various climate action initiatives including:

  • Aligning codes and standards for low-carbon technologies
  • Conducting safety research
  • Creating specialized information bulletins to reduce climate safety risk
  • Supporting development of educational materials
  • Reviewing partners' marketing and communications materials to ensure safety information is accurately conveyed
  • Providing electrical expertise and collaboration with projects

Status: Regular Full-Time, Union (40 hours per week)
Number of Positions: 1
Pay Grade: 17 ($52.89 - $61.23 per hour)
Location: Open to any of our BC regional offices (hybrid work environment)
Reports to: Technical Leader, Electrical

As a Senior Safety Officer, Electrical, you will:

  • Provide technical advice and support to the safety manager and safety officers on regulations, directives, codes, standards and technical Standard Operating Procedures to ensure consistent application throughout the province.
  • Support development and delivery of presentations to clients and stakeholders on technical issues, code updates, procedures and processes to ensure a consistent message is disseminated to the public.
  • Liaise with standards and accreditation bodies regarding problems with equipment certification and provide feedback to ensure that faulty equipment is eliminated.
  • Actively contribute to the development of codes and standards by participating on code committees or workshops.
  • Provide technical training for safety officers.
  • Provide technical assessment of safety officers to make sure they understand the responsibilities of the position and to ensure consistent application of processes throughout the province.
  • Prepare recommendations for safety manager on enforcement actions to be taken, ensuring that information is completely and accurately documented and the action taken is fair and consistent.
  • Provide support on certification and licensing requirements to ensure that requirements are correctly followed.
  • Lead or participate in serious incident investigations as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures to ensure that the investigation is thorough and there is no bias involved.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have:

  • Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship supplement by 3 years of experience as an electrical safety officer and extensive experience providing technical guidance and direction; 2-year related diploma would be an asset. High voltage experience preferred supplemented by experience coaching and mentoring employees and teaching/educating the public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills supplemented by great presentation and report writing skills.
  • Experience in the development and interpretation of safety regulations, codes and standards and performance monitoring.
  • Knowledge of risk management principles.
  • Experience in compliance monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ability to represent the organization at national/international code committees and participate in local and provincial government forums.
  • Ability to assist in developing inspection standards and procedures.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Valid BC Driver's Licence and the willingness to travel throughout the province of BC. (A driver's abstract may be requested).
  • Knowledge and experience with utilizing AI, data analytics, Microsoft Office, URSA and STAR considered an asset.
