Position Scope

Reporting to the Director of Process Systems Engineering, the Process Systems EIT will contribute to the end-to-end system engineering of complex processes and equipment. You will rigorously apply scientific, process modeling, and mathematical principles to the creation of high fidelity, dynamic process models of unit operations and full commercial chemical plants that run in real time and mimic behavior of operating production plants. The modeling and simulation will ultimately reveal new development paths and help de-risk commercialization while uncovering operating facilities performance improvements opportunities. This role involves not only technical expertise but also effective communication and collaboration with various technical and business teams. The successful candidate must demonstrate solid chemical engineering knowledge, a strong ability to learn new concepts and approach, strong problem-solving skills and a high level of "can do" attitude.

This position reports to the Director, Process Systems Engineering based in Calgary, AB. The successful candidate will be based in either Calgary AB, Squamish BC, or Vancouver BC. For at least 4 weeks per year, 1 week per quarter, this position requires the candidate to be onsite at our Innovation Centre in Squamish, BC.

Responsibilities

You will be part of an experienced & talented Process Systems Engineering team, supporting the Director, Process Systems with:

  • Assessment of operability and control of a highly integrated chemical plant over the entire life cycle.
  • Develop fully integrated engineering and physics-based steady-state and dynamic process models and simulations that represent plant performance in many geographic settings, resource constraints, and seasonally variable operating conditions and time scales.
  • Support the design of integrated processes and equipment by working with domain experts and multi-disciplinary teams to create dynamic simulation models that facilitate the analysis of information and the co-optimization of interacting sub-processes.
  • Formulate and test assumptions for improved system performance. Ensure that numerical modeling results are correct and properly represent plant processes.
  • Model chemical and physical processes and size equipment for commercial plants.
  • Analysis of intrinsically dynamic unit operations and integrated systems.
  • Statistical analysis of historic operational data collected from integrated processes that leads to technical discovery and operational optimization.
  • Identify and characterize the relationship between plant location and system response.
  • Develop simulation-based training tools and decision support systems.
  • Assist in development and validation of operating manuals and decision flow charts using the dynamic model.
Technical
  • In depth understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals, including but not limited to transport phenomena (mass, energy, momentum), thermodynamics, kinetics, reaction modeling, is an absolute requirement.
  • Familiarity with process control theory, control logic, distributed architectures for control and/or simulations.
  • Familiarity with chemical process dynamic simulation.
  • Applied mathematics and computer modeling of complex, integrated, dynamic systems.
  • Capable of developing simulation models of air and water purification processes at varying levels of fidelity ranging from detailed, first-principles models to more descriptive lumped-parameter models.
  • Strong programming and scripting skills.
  • Good understanding of statistics and analysis of time-series data and dynamic systems.
Education and Experience

Education:

  • BASc/BEng degree in Chemical Engineering is required. Masters degree is preferred.

Experience:

  • An EIT (Engineer In Training) with 3+ years industrial experience in oil and gas, refinery/petrochemicals, chemicals production or equivalent.
  • Experience with dynamic process modeling using commercial simulation software (HYSYS Dynamics, Aspen Dynamics, Dynsim, UniSim, etc.) would be a great asset.
  • Familiarity with commercial control software, PLCs and DCS systems is a plus.

Key Competencies

  • Proven track record of exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills using innovative and outside of the box solution when traditional and streamlined solutions fall short.
  • Aptitude and ability to learn new concepts, approaches, computer tools and specialized software independently.
  • Ability to follow project goals and maintain a schedule to deliver on time, on budget and on target.
  • High level of independence and self-motivation - ability to come to the table ready with solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information using a variety of media including but not limited to detailed technical documentation, verbal and visual presentation.
  • Experience and comfort working in a fast paced commercial and/or R&D environment.
  • Passionate about innovation and its application to addressing climate change.
  • Thrive on doing things that have not been done before (explorer mindset) and tackling challenging problems.
